If you are familiar with Innokin products you will know that they have a history of producing very reliable devices and their motto is design, safety and performance over gimmicks. So is this a worthwhile device perfectly suited for a brand new vaper? Read on and we shall see!

Innokin JEM styling and build quality
At first glance I expected this device to feel a bit cheap but that was not the case at all. Despite its highly compact shape the construction is absolutely solid. This is certainly well up to Innokin’s usual high standards of production and even though the JEM is very light it feels durable enough.
I’m not sure what material Innokin have used, it could be Zinc Alloy certainly, but without a doubt it’s certainly a lightweight alloy of some kind. The JEM is an extremely slim device and so narrow you could probably fit it into your shirt pocket. Anyone who doesn’t like bulky mods or simply prefers something stealthy is definitely going to love this because it is about as wide as a marker pen!
The device features a single fire button and two adjustment buttons, all of which are rattle free and highly responsive. A trademark Innokin feature is an LED positioned directly behind the fire button with the light changing colour as the battery loses charge. There is a display of sorts which indicates which Wattage setting you have selected but this only illuminates when vaping.
The 510 pin is solid but due to the space available on the top of the device you will be limited to using the included JEM Tank. Although I would think that a GP Spheroid might work. There are a minimum of logos on this device and tastefully display the name “JEM” and the “Innokin” company branding.
The JEM is powered by a rechargeable 1000mAh internal battery which given the high Resistance of the included JEM coils should last you a good amount of vape time. To charge the device simply connect the Micro USB Port via the included cable to a suitable source. The port is located in the base which means have to lie the device flat when charging, but the good news is that it supports Pass-through technology so you can vape while you charge if needed.
JEM Tank
For those of you who have been vaping as long as I have the JEM Tank might seem a bit familiar, for in many ways it looks a great deal like an old CE4 Clearomizer. Of course looks can be deceiving and despite its slim profile the JEM Tank holds 2ml of juice and includes all the modern trappings including a top fill design, adjustable airflow and a simple to replace coil.
A 510 Delrin drip tip is included and is suitably narrow bore to suit MTL (Mouth to Lung) vapers. You can of course easily swap the drip tip out for another from your collection.
Airflow
The JEM Tank airflow consists of an easy to adjust ring with a total of six holes, three on each side. In a way it’s a bit much for a MTL tank and while it does suit that kind of draw it can be a touch airy. I dare say those of you who want a restrictive draw will prefer to set it to half a single air hole on each side. To an extent I feel Innokin should have added one more very small single air hole.
Fully wide open the airflow almost caters to a restricted lung inhale style of vaping which was rather surprising.
Ease of use
The JEM uses the typical Innokin mode of operation.
- Three clicks of the fire button powers the device on/off.
- You scroll through those settings using the up and down buttons and each one lights up clearly – like I said this is about as easy as it gets.
- The device goes from 10-13.5W but this is not a true Variable Wattage device. By using the adjustment buttons you can select each setting: 10W, 11W, 12W, 13W and 13.5W.
- To vape hold down the fire button.
- The tank is extremely straightforward to use and the kit explains how to change and prime coils. The top fill works well and you shouldn’t run into any problems because this is as simple as it gets!
Innokin JEM Vape Kit performance
I primed the coil and filled up the tank with some Indigene Paraxu. After allowing ten to fifteen minutes for the coil to saturate I took my first vape. What really came as a surprise was the excellent flavour, because it was extremely clean and crisp. Another surprise was the amount of vapour the tank put out. Rest assured its no cloud chaser but it does put out a respectable volume which is totally unexpected given the small size of the tank.
The draw was really enjoyable though it can be a touch too airy if you don’t close down the airflow enough. Yet this never seemed to really affect the flavour quality. Providing you close down that airflow it will give you a very satisfactory mouth to lung vape but for those of you who prefer things more restricted you might want to swap out the drip tip for something with a narrower bore.
In terms of the power settings the 1.6ohm coil was personally at its best for me at the 13W setting. There was just the right amount of heat present for me. To be fair the JEM vapes perfectly well at the lower settings and while the flavour is just as good the vape itself was cooler but some folks may prefer that.
The battery lasted me a good five hours and I think that is really down to Innokin using sensible Resistance coils. Far too often we see a 1000mAh device bundled with a tank which uses 0.5ohm coils. The device charges quickly and takes about an hour and as I said earlier you can vape while charging if needed.
Conclusion
Even though I have far too many devices and atomizers available to me I found this to be a really excellent product and I was really very satisfied with the quality of vape it offered. In fact I found myself using it often especially when I wanted something lightweight while going to the shops. So while this is clearly marketed as a starter kit for a new vaper I do feel that there may be quite a few veterans who might actually enjoy this, especially from a convenience or a stealth point of view.
But for the brand new vaper this is a truly excellent product by Innokin who clearly understands their targeted user demographic. Sadly this kind of quality product wasn’t around when I first made the switch to vaping and it’s amazing to see how far the humble starter set has come. The JEM is well made, very simple to use and offers a lovely flavoursome vape! Given that it also includes two coils, a clear user guide and is priced extremely reasonably you have absolutely no excuse not to give vaping a try.
I have only one very minor gripe and I wish the airflow on the JEM Tank was ever so slightly more restrictive but I think given how good everything else is most folks will be willing to overlook that.
