IJOY Captain PD1865 Box Mod styling and build quality
The Captain PD1865 is an attractive looking dual 18650 box mod which features a zinc alloy finish contrasted with carbon fibre inserts. The device is available in several colour finishes and I received the rainbow version for review. The carbon fibre inserts while slightly textured are only stickers and should they ever peel there are replacement alternative patterned ones in the box. On one side of the device the mod has some very prominent logos but in my opinion this works well with the colourful background.
This device has a maximum Wattage of 225W and offers Variable Wattage and Temperature Control modes. In addition it has full support for all major wire types.
The 510 pin was durable and had a nice amount of travel, so I had no issues getting any of my atomizers to sit flush. There is also a good amount of space on the top of the device so most 28-30mm diameter atomizers shouldn’t overhang.
In terms of size I found the Captain PD1865 to be just right, the shape made for a good grip and the device is not especially heavy when fitted with batteries. There are three buttons on the device all of which were rattle free. The fire button is oversized which made for a nice feature since it was always easy to press no matter how I held the device. The two adjustment buttons are a touch on the small size but they worked well enough and were responsive.
I found the main display to be excellent since it is very bright, uses a clear font and is set out in a logical manner. All of the typical information is displayed included Wattage, Temperature, Voltage and Resistance. In addition the charge of both batteries is shown.
At the bottom front of the device you will find the Micro USB port which is fitted in a horizontal position, which means you can keep the PD1865 upright when charging. The port also allows you to receive firmware updates which you can download from IJOY.
The battery compartment features a press and slide to open door, with the correct battery orientation clearly marked on the inside. I found the door to be a touch loose when no batteries were fitted but the problem went away the moment I put my batteries in there. There is a single large slot in the door which provides suitable battery ventilation.
All in all I found the device to be well put together, attractive and ergonomically designed.
I have already covered the included Captain S Sub Ohm tank in detail, so check out my review here.
Ease of use
This is was a very straightforward device to use so you are unlikely to run into issues with it. The manual is clear and covers all of the various functions.
Captain PD1865 Box Mod performance
In Variable Wattage mode the device worked extremely well. I had no issues at all when using my Taifun GT III. The included Captain S Sub Ohm tank delivered an enjoyable vape experience and will definitely appeal to cloud chasing fans!
To test Temperature Control I made use of some Vandy Vape 316 Stainless Steel MTL Superfine Fused Clapton Wire to coil my Kayfun Prime. Using a 0.7ohm build I got a good vape but I did have to play with the Temperature and Wattage a little to get best results. I would say compared to my other devices the Temperature Control mode seems ever so slightly unpowered, but this wasn’t a big deal and you can easily compensate by adjusting the settings.
Battery life was typical of a dual 18650 device and will depend on you Wattage settings and how often you vape. In addition extensive use of Temperature Control will also drain the battery faster.
Conclusion
The Captain PD1865 has a decent build quality and was reliable. The included tank while geared towards cloud chasers does offer an enjoyable vape.
Temperature Control did feel a touch unpowered to me but works well enough and at least the option is there if you wish to make use of it. At the end of the day I personally felt this was a good kit and would be very straightforward for a newcomer to use. Do check it out if you like the sound of it!
