SMOK T-Priv styling and build quality

The initial first impression I had of this device was a good one since it reminded me a great deal of the Transformers toys I once owned as a kid. The device features quite a stunning design and is made up of angular panels, lots of sheer angled edges and recessed areas. In many ways I thought the silver and black version sent for review looked very Megatron and combined with the styling looks far more like a Decepticon than any Autobot!

It really is a very solid device with some serious weight. I suspect this device could certainly take its fair share of knocks. The T-Priv be purchased in one of many different colours and features a metallic painted finish which has not tarnished in the short time I have spent using it. One thing you will notice is that there is some significant depth to the T-Priv and as such I think it may feel a little unwieldy if you have smaller hands. On the plus side of the things despite the bulk I thought it felt very well balanced!

The T-Priv features the trademark SMOK firing bar which I have not always cared for with some of their past devices, but I have to say this one feels just right and is very responsive with a comfortably good, short throw. There are also two small adjustment buttons located near the top of the device, these too are comfortable to use and, thankfully, rattle free. The top of the mod features a Stainless Steel 510 connector with good threading and also a Gold-Plated spring-loaded 510 pin. I had absolutely no issues at all getting any of my atomizers to sit flush. There is a generous amount of space too so most tanks or RDA’s up to 28-30mm should still look good and not overhang.

Also located on the top of the device is the OLED display. It is smaller than the one on most SMOK devices but nicely set out. In fact I actually prefer the layout compared to the one on the Alien which always appeared cluttered to me. There is a glass screen protector so the display is not quite as bright but still clearly legible. All of the typical information is shown including Resistance, Wattage, Temperature, remaining battery life etc.

One very unique part of the T-Priv’s design are the recessed sections - and behind these are what appears to be a section of white plastic which lights up with nine LEDs. In a way it’s like a new and improved version of an idea which found its way into the SMOK XCube II. You have a large amount of options regarding these LEDs and you can set them to be constantly illuminated whenever the device is on, (this will drain your batteries faster) or have them only illuminate when vaping, or just switch them off completely. You can change the displayed colour, have it flash or fade in and out, or cycle through various rainbow options. Believe me, your trendy Xmas lights will pale in comparison to this thing!

The Micro USB Port is located on one side of the device near the top. The port only supports 1A internal charging. At the bottom of the device you will find the battery compartment door which is an excellent fit, being secure but very easy to open. The inside of the battery door is clearly marked to show the correct battery orientation.

TFV8 Big Baby Tank

If you to decide to opt for the kit version of the T-Priv it comes with the TFV8 Big Baby Tank. The tank is 24.5mm in diameter and has fully adjustable airflow. In standard form the tank has a 5ml capacity but only a 2ml capacity if it is sold in the EU. The construction of the tank in general looks pretty good but sadly I couldn’t make use of the top filling since the hinged top fill port is literally welded to the top cap and won’t swing open. I did still manage to vape it so I could share my thoughts but not once with a full tank. The tank I received had a Q2 0.4ohm dual coil pre-fitted.

Ease of use

The T-Priv has exactly the same type of interface you would find on a typical SMOK device.

  • Three clicks of the trigger fire button switches the device on. When powered on a further five clicks will lock/unlock the device.
  • Three clicks of the fire button brings up the menu. Menu options include Mode, Colour, Puff Counter, Settings and Power. Clicking the fire button cycles through options and you confirm selections by holding the fire button. Context specific fine adjustments can be made with the adjustment buttons.
  • The Mode option allows you to switch between Variable Wattage and Temperature Control. The Wattage option allows you to choose between different firing settings: Soft, Normal and Hard.
  • When using Temperature Control you first set your Wattage then choose either Nickel, Titanium or Stainless Steel. Temperature Coefficient Resistance can be manually adjusted if desired.
  • The Puff Counter is useful if you want to track how often you vape. The Colour function controls the LED lighting.
  • The Settings function offers contrast adjustment, flip the display orientation, enable stealth mode and adjust screen timeout. In addition there is an Ohm Resistance Manual Option and a Firmware Update option
  • The Power option is for when you wish to switch the device off.

SMOK T-Priv performance

Even though I received the T-Priv with the included TFV8 Big Beast Tank I am going to mainly stick to covering the device itself.

The T-Priv performs extremely well. It fires up quickly and I really enjoyed using it in Variable Wattage Mode with my Kayfun 5. Just like other SMOK devices the optional power modes work well and the “Hard” option is especially useful when you have an atomizer fitted with a thicker coil.

Temperature Control Mode worked absolutely fine when using my Herakles Sub Ohm tank with a Ni200 coil and I noticed no weird Resistance fluctuation or heat spikes.

To check out the lighting I set the T-Priv to only illuminate when vaping and I thought red matched up well. Guess it helped to create an even stronger Megatron look and seemed suitably sinister and menacing. Of course if I was walking down the street using this device I might think twice about it and I certainly wouldn’t want to look like a human flashlight using it at night. I think the LED lighting is kind of funky in its own special way and most vapers will clearly already know whether it’s something they will like or loathe.

Battery life seemed very reasonable and compared well to other dual 18650 devices but I suspect that if you are heavily rocking that lighting the battery may drain much faster.

Despite my problems with the included tanks top filling I took it apart and managed to get juice enough juice in there without going over the top of the coil. As far as the vape it offers go it’s very much like the TFV8 Baby Beast but more potent. The flavour is surprisingly good and will satisfy most users. With loads of airflow available the cloud production was excellent. I did notice that the nicotine hit from the juice is certainly far more noticeable and I found myself getting a little light headed vaping on this tank.

Conclusion

Personally I cannot fault this device. If offers solid performance and has a very individual style that stands out from the crowd! It is also built extremely well and feels remarkably solid and durable. The trigger fire bar that I used to dislike on previous SMOK devices feels like a huge improvement.

The LED lighting is a nice touch but like anything which is a novelty you will either fall in love with it or just want to shut it down as quickly as you can. In my opinion the included tank vapes extremely well and compliments the device nicely, just hope that the top fill lid on yours isn’t welded shut. I think I just got unlucky with the tank and since I really loved using the device I feel the SMOK T-Priv Kit is definitely something you should check out!

Many thanks to SMOK who kindly sent this product to Planet of the Vapes for us to review.
