E-Liquid Reviews

All Star Shortfills by Froot

If only there was one range of e-liquids that covered all the classic flavours in one line-up...oh wait there is! We check out the All Star Range from Froot!

Somebody once told me about a great e-liquid flavour that I just had to try, a strawberry custard juice which very quickly took the juice world by storm and became a template for many other e-liquid lines even to this day. Some flavours just become instant classics and it feels like every juice range must have their version to compete. Many try, many fail, but I have been lucky enough to try a new take on the classics by the master mixers over at Froot Vape, aptly named All Star.

Now I will put my hands up and admit that initially I thought this was a bit of a cop out, I mean it shows no imagination to come up with a menu like this. But then I remembered who I was dealing with and totally got it. This isn’t an attempt to copy the legends, this is more about taking the e-liquid industry to school and showing everyone how it should be done. After all, you'll never know if you don't go, you'll never shine if you don't glow, and boy do these shine!

I was sent the 50ml shortfills but they list the 100ml versions on the website. The brand design is sharp and eye catching. Each flavour has its own colour scheme which reflects the juice inside. The bottles are black plastic and are slightly transparent although the labels block out any chance of being able to see how much is left. They are all 70VG/30PG and have space for your nic shot.

With so much to do, so much to see, I’d better get a wiggle on and get to the good stuff!

Bubblegum

“Sweet and splendid bubblegum, a tasty reminder of your childhood favourite.”

Well they absolutely hit the ground running with this one, it’s a corker! I love bubblegum juice but so many taste really synthetic or are too weak to make any real impact, but not so here. It is bold, in your face and oh so chewy! It is a real taste of childhood, they have nailed the double bubble flavour which was always a popular addition to my 10p mix back in the day. That's the way I like it and I'll never get bored. Simply put, it is bubbly perfection!

Lemon Tart

“Buttery shortcrust pastry filled with a sweet Sicilian lemon curd and tangy lemon meringue.”

I am rather partial to a lemon tart e-liquid so was very interested to see how this one stands out from the rather large crowd. What they have done is really concentrated on the components of a good lemon tart and have built it up from there. You get a delicious shortcrust base which is almost biscuity in its texture and feel. Layered on to that is a sweet, delicate meringue which delivers a light sweetness which balances out the superbly juicy lemon curd which cuts through like a perfectly ripe citrus fruit. Every layer works well, and when put together, they combine to become something very special indeed. It also shows a great understanding of the culinary skills required to make a great dessert and then they manage to transfer it over in e-liquid form.

Red Aniseed

“A fantastic traditional sweet flavour of Aniseed Balls”

Out of all the juices in my review package, Red Aniseed was probably the one I was least looking forward to checking out. I really like aniseed but it requires care, too much is just unpleasant and not enough can be wishy washy and bland. This is strong and fresh but never overwhelmingly so, and I found myself topping up my tank quite quickly and repeatedly. I enjoyed it so much that I had to drag myself away so I could check out the other bottles! It has a delightfully sweet note which dances on your tongue and keeps things light and tasty. There is also a herbal sensation going on, as you should get with proper traditional aniseed balls if you can find them. Personally I think there is a distinct lack of proper herbal vapes out there and this manages to fill on that blank nicely.

Salted Caramel Macchiato

“Arabica coffee beans, fresh hints of cache smothered in a creamy salted caramel drizzle.”

Salted Caramel Macchiato was another one that I was slightly hesitant about. I love a good fresh coffee, in fact I would class myself as a complete coffee snob, but the amount of vapable coffee juices can probably be counted on one hand, and the ones that are actually really nice are even rarer. Just sniffing the bottle put my mind at rest, it smells like a decent cup of fresh coffee. Vaping it was even better, proper coffee perfectly brewed and with a great balance of salted caramel syrup. It hit the spot perfectly. It isn’t all good news though. As with most coffee vapes, it is a bit of a coil clogger so I was needing to change my wicks with every refill. With new cotton, it was lovely, but it does require a bit of maintenance to keep it tasting fresh.

Skittlez Ice Cream

“A sweet rainbow mix of skittlez with a mix of cool Ice Cream”

This Skittlez Ice Cream e-liquid did my head in. You see I am a bit weird with how I eat certain foods, some things have a specific method and I hate to deviate from it. Now with skittles, I open the bag and pour them out in a bowl, then I separate each flavour and line them up so I have neat rows of each variety so I can see exactly how many of each I have. Then I eat them one by one, starting with the ones that I have the most of until I have the same amount of each. Finally I can eat the rest, sweet by sweet and flavour by flavour. That is just how it is done and that is that (if you think that’s weird, wait till I have a bounty juice to review and then you’ll see just how obsessive I can be!). Now the reason I have told you my method is so hopefully you will understand how much it messed with my head that this tastes exactly like grabbing a handful of sweets and shoving them all in at once! It doesn’t make sense not to live for fun, your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb. The flavour is perfect, pure candy bliss, but the flavour is so spot on that I kept feeling bad that I couldn’t separate things out and vape it properly. But on the plus side, the ice cream flavour is inspired, a perfect Cornish vanilla flavour which blends everything together brilliantly.

Strawberry Custard

“Sweet and ripe British strawberries mixed with a creamy vanilla custard”

We end things with a stone cold classic…Strawberry Custard. As I said in my intro, this is one of the all time classic flavours which really did change the scene when the original first came out. It totally changed the landscape of e-liquids and the fact that still now every big juice manufacturer has their own take on this legendary flavour. As I am sure you can tell, I have been really impressed with this range so I had very high hopes for this bottle, but I have to say it was a bit of a let-down. I think the anticipation was just too great for anything to live up to my expectations so it is probably as much my fault as anything. Don’t get me wrong, it does exactly what it says it will, but I just expected more. The custard is creamy and custardy, the strawberry is fresh and fruity, it just didn’t rock my world. I also felt the strawberry needed to be a bit more forthcoming, it very much sits back in the blend and gets a bit lost. It is still very easy to vape, but it isn’t a gamechanger like some of the other flavours in the range are.

Final thoughts

Well Froot vape can certainly teach many other juice brands a lesson or two in the fine art of mixing. The flavours are mostly superb and some are easily the best versions of some classic bangers. Even the less impressive ones are still top quality juices. It was a bold move to do a whole range of classics, it could have fallen flat but the quality of blending and the understanding of flavour really do mean that most of these juices really are at the top of their game. It goes to show that whilst all that glitters is gold, only shooting stars break the mould!

If these take your fancy, you can pick up 100ml for £14.99 including two nicshots from Dispergo Vaping.
