Vandy Vape Pulse 22 BF RDA

Vandy Vape were founded in 2016 in Shenzhen, China, and they have become one of the most prolific manufacturers on the market since then, releasing no less than 8 different atomisers over the past year with even more on the horizon, and they have had a couple of big hits in the form of the Kylin and the Govad!

One of the newest atomisers to come out of the Vandy Vape stable is the Pulse 22 BF RDA- as the name suggests, this RDA is primarily aimed at the squonking market, however a standard 510 pin is included for non-squonk usage. The Pulse 22 BF RDA was created in conjunction with popular vaping personality Tony B from The Vapor Trail YouTube channel, and it has quickly become a popular choice with squonking and non-squonking vapers alike. Let's have a look at how it performs...

  • 22mm width
  • 24.5mm height (excluding drip tip and 510 connector)
  • Designed in conjunction with Tony B from The Vapor Trail YouTube Channel
  • Bottom feed pin pre installed for squonking use
  • 510 pin included
  • Unique leak resistant side tubular direct airflow
  • Bottom feed directly to side juice wells
  • Six different colour finishes available
  • Postless single coil deck
  • Choice of Ultem or Delrin drip tips included in the box
  • 510 drip tip adaptor included

What's in the Box

The Vandy Vape Pulse 22 BF RDA comes with the bottom feed squonking pin pre-installed, a regular 510 connector pin, Ultem drip tip, Delrin drip tip, 510 drip tip adaptor, 2mm coiling rod, screwdriver multi tool, instruction manual, spare o-rings and spare post screws.

Design and Build Quality

Measuring in with a 22mm width and 24.5mm height excluding the 510 connector and drip tip, the Vandy Vape Pulse 22 BF RDA is a fairly small RDA manufactured from stainless steel. On one side the Pulse logo has been laser engraved on, with the Vandy Vape logo found on the opposite side. Six different colour finishes are available for purchase at the time of writing.

An Ultem drip tip is pre-installed with the Vandy Vape Pulse 22 BF RDA, with a black Delrin drip tip also supplied in the box. The Pulse 22 BF RDA has an 810 drip tip fitting as standard, however a 510 drip tip adaptor is included in the box if you wish to use narrower bore drip tips.

The top cap actually splits off into two parts, the top part forms the airflow control ring, which I found nice and smooth right out of the box, and removing this also allows you to drip juice down onto the deck if you aren't making use of the squonking functionality. The bottom half of the top cap has two airflow tubes on each side, which direct airflow straight to your coil, and this locks into place on the deck via a notch cut on opposite sides of the deck.

At the base of the deck, you have the Pulse 22 logo, 'a Tony B Project', CE mark, serial number and 'Manufactured by Vandy Vape' all laser engraved on. This RDA comes 'squonk ready' so to speak, and the bottom feed pin required for use with a squonking mod is pre-installed. If you don't own a squonker, or have no interest in squonking with this RDA, then you have nothing to fear as a standard 510 pin is included in the box.

Building the Vandy Vape Pulse 22 BF RDA

The Pulse 22 BF RDA has a postless gold plated build deck, which is designed for single coil use only. Post holes at the base of the deck are of a good size, meaning that you can get some fairly big coils in here, and the screws clamp coil legs down nicely. You can make use of the notches cut at either side of the deck to help with positioning your coil correctly. A 2mm coiling rod has been thoughtfully included in the box, however I disregarded this and went for a 2.5mm diameter coil- there still seems to be enough room in there for a 3mm coil!

At the centre of the deck there are two holes which ensure that juice is distributed equally to your wick tails when squonking, and given the position of the airflow you will have a hard time over squonking with this atty! A nice and deep juice well also ensures that this holds plenty of juice.

One of the most unique airflow arrangements I've seen on an RDA is present on the Pulse 22 BF RDA, there are four angular tube shaped airflow holes which protrude out into the deck directing airflow straight onto your coil, and you can adjust the airflow by rotating the smooth airflow control ring as you see fit. The airflow ranges from an ever so slightly restricted lung hit when fully open, right down to a restricted lung hit when closed off.

I'll get straight to the point here- what I have found is that the Pulse 22 BF RDA seems to perform best with a low resistance build and high wattage, making it perfect for use with mechanical squonking mods for example. I felt that it was a little on the tame side with builds in the 0.9-1.2ohm range, however when I built under 0.5ohm I really did seem to get the most out of this RDA.

My favourite build to date on the Pulse 22 BF RDA has been a 0.25ohm fused clapton coil, which is my ideal resistance for mechanical squonking mod usage. I get a very warm and flavoursome vape, with plenty of dense vapour as well. None of the e-liquids I vaped in the Pulse 22 BF RDA seemed muted, rather this seemed to pick up on even the lighter flavour notes present.

A real bonus is that it is very hard to get this RDA to leak when squonking, thanks to the airflow positioning and the deep juice well. You really do have to oversquonk this hard in order to get it to leak!

We Vape

There has been a fair old amount of hype behind the Pulse 22 BF RDA since its recent release, and after trying it for myself I do believe that it is pretty deserving of the praise it has been receiving! It is a rock solid performer, perfect for squonking given its design, and it also performs just as well when used on a non-squonk mod.

If you are in the market for a new bottom fed RDA that offers something a little different in the design department, then the Pulse 22 BF RDA is well worth looking at. Given the very competitive price that it is available for, I'd highly recommend this RDA!  Grey Haze have kindly given us one of these superb RDAs to give away - check out the competition here.
