Disasterous attempt at scotish roll

So I tried this https://www.reddit.com/r/electronic...tf/my_method_to_wicking_the_subtank_mini_rba/ as every normal method I have tried fails on the subtank mini. Anyway it was a disaster as after a few vapes the cotton burnt inside the coil. I am guessing theres too much cotton in there, but I thought that the Scottish roll that was the point of a lot of cotton. I did struggle to get the cotton in even after taking a bit off. So what am I doing wrong. Btw I found this link on reddit.

How are you actually inserting the wick? I only ask because every time I wicked my subtank rba with the popular 'bunny ear' method, it failed miserably.

Then I found this and my wicks have had a 100% success rate ever since. No dry hits, handling much higher wattages and surprisingly, no leaks at all. Didn't matter what cotton I used or what kind of wick preparation I attempted such as Scottish rolling. Just be sure not to cut the end too short or you'll have leaking issues. Tiny adjustments so the outer casing just barely goes on smoothly.

Well I tried that but no go for me, after about 10 minutes burnt hit and everytime cotton is burnt just inside the coil. Tried muji and cotton bacon. ID of coil is 2.5mm so measured muji and tried 2.5mm, 3mm and 3.5mm, didn't matter how much or less cotton I put in same result. I know my wicking capabilities are shite but I just don't get what I am doing wrong. Back to the drawing board I guess. Coil is glowing from inside out and I cannot see any hotspots. What I may do to rule out hotspots is make a spaced coil as I guess that way hot spots couldn't occur.

It's the same rba deck right? The v2? What VG/PG ratio are you using?

No-one should be using Muji if they want to push for extra performance. The only thing Muji is good for is MTL at high ohms.

There is a multitude of specialist cottons that put Muji to shame - Cotton Bacon, Fibre Freaks, Fuzion, Shake and Vape, Kendo.

You didn't say what sort of coil you're using - many prebuilt coils have an insufficient inner diameter so you don't have enough cotton relative to the amount of wire. As a rough guide, the ID should be at least 5 times the thickness of the wire.
Disagree with you there I've used Muji in my series drippers and it's stood up to it fine. If anything it lasts longer than Cotton Bacon. The only plus point to Bacon is the instant clean taste with no break in time

And edit; is it the way your pushing it through the coil or how your tails are in contact with the wick holes?

Tbh it sounds like that may be your issue as you've tried everything else!

I find spaced coils MUCH better for taste etc.
I would give a spaced coil a try.

Nothing wrong with it in drippers and it definitely outlasts CB, but it can't compete in tanks where the specialist cottons wick much better.

Lol, bit of an odd comment that one bud ;). Especially given it is pretty much THE most commonly and widely used cotton amongst your "average DIY'er".

You said it yourself as well, the other cotton types are more specialist for specific purposes. Your average vaper is using Muji, it's that simple lol. I use it in my drippers too and RBA's with no problems at all. To say it's a cotton for MTL and in high ohm builds only simply isn't true lol. It works very well DTL and for the ranges most of us may be vaping up to it's perfectly OK :). I don't vape above 90 watts with any of my builds or mods. Muji holds up and lasts just fine :).

I use CB V2 more in the RTA/RTDA's for example. Yes, I'm experimenting with CB in the drippers too admittedly. I'm even running one dripper at the moment with dual coils with one side muji with longer tails down into the wells and the other side CB that ends up looking like a big puffed up bow tie. I'm not a cloud chaser, I have no interest in taking it up permanently, but I am having some fun with the Tsunami just for the sake of it to see what it can do lol :D. I've been blowing 12' clouds with no experience, no real technique for really getting it right, just by messing around. 12' is nothing to.a true cloud chaser I know, but it's as far as I'm ever going to want to push it lol.

I buy liquids to satisfy my need for nicotine, not blow half the bottle across the room :D.

It all comes down to what you're used to working with, what you've made work for your needs and does something glaringly onbious need changing!! Iif it's doing the job without issues and you're happy, why change it? If things aren't working no matter what you do, then yes, obviously something else may need trying oit, agreed :).

Nobody should be using Muji lol. That's like saying nobody should be using Kanthal pmsl ;) :) :D.

It was a bit of a sweeping statement, so to clarify, in my experience Muji is poor compared to specialist cottons, for flavour and wicking (which is obviously not so important with drippers).

Flavour is subjective and we actually know very little about the workings of it so we can put that aside, but when it comes to wicking Muji is very poor by comparison, but people bought a lot of it and adapted their vaping styles to it and are reluctant to change or even try something new, because, as you say, it works for them and they may be very good at getting it just right.

For new people struggling to get it right however, the specialist cottons with a much larger margin of error have to be tried.
