"but I stay away from a lot of custards as the market is still largely unregulated."

Really???? :11::11::11: I rather doubt that statement would hold much water these days? Unless you are buying someone else's homebrew.:diy:

I'm not trying to get into an argument :) I just wanted to point out that this chemical is harmful, and it is still present in a lot of vape juices worldwide. I think it's banned in the UK but I stay away from a lot of custards as the market is still largely unregulated.
Imagine you were vaping a harmful chemical, it's going to take many years for the effects to be known, so it's best to avoid what we know to be harmful. Wrt BOS, we will never be able directly to attribute any case vaping, in the same way we can never attribute lung cancer to smoking. It's only in the study of populations that these relationships are found, and that could take decades.

I'm almost certain that in the future there will be similar scares of the diacetyl type, some will be based in scientific fact and some not. Personally I don't stress too much about what's in my e-juice, or I should say the effects of the inhaling the flavouring elements of my e-juice. I only buy juice from reputable sources and my e-liquid 'diet' is very much varied, I'm not caning one type of juice 24/7. Other folk feel differently I know, but tbh I smoked for years and years knowing full well what awful cack was in tobacco and gave it far less thought than I do about what's in my e-liquid. I feel pretty confident that vaping isn't going to get 'outed' as worse for my health than smoking was at any point in my lifetime :)

Probably should have qualified that: I make my own juice, and there is no regulation on flavourings since they're essentially just food flavourings.
This kinda thread just reminds me of the same types I meet on weed forums i.e. it's all good, there is no risk - they have no sense on nuance. Vaping is safer than smoking (which is pretty much the absolute worst thing you can do for you health), it's not been shown to be harm free and I think vapers should be aware of that.

Aha....... Weed Forums eh? That explains everything then. :D

I didn't think anyone was saying vaping is harmless.

But what this thread is about is diacetyl in e-juice.

Here's what we know:

Popcorn lung that developed amongst workers in a popcorn factory was attributed to them breathing in large amounts of diacetyl. There is some argument over whether it was proven that diacetyl actually caused their popcorn or not. Correlation does not always equal causation.

There is at least an order of magnitude more diacetyl in one average cigarette than there is in a 30 ml bottle of e-juice with a "high" diacetyl content.

Nobody who has contracted popcorn lung has ever had it attributed to the diaceytl in cigarettes.

Therefore, the idea that vaping minute quantities of diaceytl could lead to popcorn lung is tenuous, at best, and downright scaremongering at worst.

this is not true

I died last night with popcorn lung after trying my first custard juice

I only had 10ml and was a 40 a day smoker before

spot on mate, this is the staggering fact i think alot of people choose to ignore when laying claim to popcorm lung and vaping,
i have never heard a single person say "aw my grandad just been diagnosed with popcorn lung from smoking" and the risk of contracting it from smoking is factually greater than that of vaping
still people want to start waving the popcorn lung flags

As of 20th May 2017 the full implementation of the Tobacco Product Directive (TPD) will take effect and all liquids will have to be tested and sold in a maximum size bottle of 10ml (except for zero nicotine).
im guessing you will still see illegal sales on market stalls and ebay which are best avoided.

this still doesnt stop the weekly posts by new members worried about the reports theve read on facebook and some news reports about Popcorn Lung and the dreaded Diacetyl which used to be in certain cream/custard flavors. sadly once its been posted on the internet it stays there for life and keeps getting bumped up by unsuspecting do gooders who think they are doing us a faver. sadly they are not.

panic not as this is old news and since it first serfaced almost 2 years ago there has been much research and this has now been debunked.

a little history.
popcorn lung as far as ive read was first aired back in the 1940's in popcorn factories where workers were mixing hot vats of popcorn for 8 hours a day. in some cases it casued a condition which was named as popcorn lung (bronchiolitis obliterans). it has also been mentioned that it has affected some workers (8 people) who mix and package flavored microwave-popcorn but now health and safety is a leading role in any buisiness masks and goggles are now being used for many years and air filtration fans are used so this will be a thing of the past.

now the facts we know of.
a single cigarette has more diacetyl in it than the worst found cases of diacetyl in e liquid.
not one person in the world has died from popcorn lung who smokes cigarettes.

so panic not as its pure scaremongering at its best.

warning on the video. our Vic uses some strong language at times.

Thanks for making this a sticky - good to know the facts and almost makes you wonder why juice has to be free of the stuff! :hmm:

No agreed, but Weed is a No Go area on POTV so that's that.
