I am resisting the temptation to start quoting Christopher Hitchens in a second thread today, so I won't.
But, and there was always going to be a but, politics - like religion - is about the subtraction of a chunk of freedom in return for a promise of a safer life. By doing so, those who wish power and wealth use every means possible to ensure that they achieve this aim. Those who either believe it isn't so or simply don't know allow it to happen.
Never has the global population relinquished so much freedom of thought, act and expression in return for so little gain. My post-war lifetime is witnessing the largest roll-back of the age of enlightenment ever seen.
Or, to paraphrase, do not go gently into that dark avenue at night.
