Few days ago, leading researchers on tobacco and e-cigarettes from all over the world gathered together and prepared a letter to Health Commissioner Borg and other relevant parties concerning e-cigarette regulation, emphasizing the mistakes made in the regulation. As you may have seen, our letter was backed by extensive scientific evidence supporting all our arguments. Our letter was featured in the journal “New Scientist”. The European Commission replied to us through Mr Seychell (the Deputy Director General for Consumers and Health).
His response can be found here (pdf file)
Instead of making any personal comments judging their response, I will let anyone decide by himself on the integrity and validity of the arguments from each side. Below is our reply to Mr Seychell, once again signed by the same distinguished scientists in the field of tobacco and e-cigarette research.

The only argument they have left to try and justify their regulations and to emotionally/morally blackmail everyone is that gateway theory.

Personally, I'm getting sick of hearing this 'won't someone PLEASE think of the children?' bullshit. Children grow into teenagers, who then grow into adults. Teenagers experiment with all kinds of stuff and I'd rather see teenagers experimenting with vaping (especially if they use zero nic) than with tobacco cigarettes (which they still continue to do despite all of the efforts of the anti smoking lobby).

When are we going to hear someone say 'won't someone PLEASE think of the smokers and vapers?'. The likelihood is that we will NEVER hear any of the policymakers say this because in their eyes, we are low life, bottom feeding scum and we are expendable, acceptable losses in their crusade against nicotine. Their attitude is 'who cares if smokers continue to die early or if vapers are forced back to tobacco.. they are beyond redemption'.

It's time these arseholes were brought to account for their constant failure to prevent youngsters from taking up tobacco in the first place (which is the main thrust of their gateway argument) and for then demonising, vilifying and abandoning those youngsters once they reach adulthood.. yes, those very same children that they plead for us to think about.

Bunch of cold hearted, lying, corrupt bastards.

For the sake of completeness we would like to ask for clarification whether the scientists that have signed the mail have undertaken research, provided consulting or received
funding/travel support from electronic cigarettes companies. I think Honourable
Members of the European Parliament would appreciate Ml transparency on potential
conflicts of interest. Also they might be interested to know whether there are dissentį
views to the opinions expressed in your letter.

Sigh,so it's okay for an MEP/MP to steal money via false expenses claims but not okay for an e-cig company to fund research into countering an ignorant politicians view that nicotine is a toxin?
