Mesh "coils" - help please.

Here's the thing... On a conventional wire coil, longer wire = more resistance, thicker wire = less resistance. Simples. I like the drainpipe analogy, it makes sense (to me).
However, what are the rules for tailoring your resistance on a mesh element? I've been experimenting with a mesh RTA and I can't figure out what the correlation is between length, thickness and resistance, or is it simply the the mass/area regardless of the shape that determines it? Answers on a postcard...

PS. I should clarify... some mesh RTAs are horizontal and some, like mine, are vertical. For the purposes of this discusssion I'm defining "length" as the distance around the tube from one post/clamp to the other, and "thickness" as the distance between the edges inside the clamp.
