I’ve not made my mind up yet, it all depends on where it’s home will be. The living room has a lot of oak in it which I have a varnish for, but if I use that it may get a little lost being the same. I’ll move it around for a few weeks until I decide.

If you're not sure and you want to try something easily reversible, you could go with a coat or two of shellac followed by wax (preferably hard wax but any wax polish will do). That would bring out the natural beauty of the wood and also feel lovely to the touch. If you decide it's not for you then a quick wipe with white spirit will take off the wax and meths will do the same for the shellac.
