Innokin iSub Apex5 Review by Dan Willis

Innokin iSub Apex5

The Innokin iSub Apex was released towards the end of 2014, and received a very warm reception from vapers indeed. I myself thought it was a superb sub ohm tank for flavour, in my recent review here. Innokin have swiftly followed up the release of this great tank with the release of the Innokin iSub Apex5, featuring a new Black Edition look, the same excellent top filling system, the superb PRISM flavour system, an extended 5ml capacity and the ability for the tank to be pushed to even higher wattages with the included BVC Clapton coils!

The original iSub Apex was an outstanding flavour tank, does the iSub Apex5 offer the same great performance?

Innokin iSub Apex5 Looks and Capacity

At first glance, the iSub Apex5 is strikingly similar to the original iSub Apex tank. It’s taller than the original, due to the width of the tank remaining at 22mm and the capacity increasing to 5ml from 3ml, and there is a new Black Edition available which means you can pick up this tank in an all black finish, which looks really great with black coloured mods. The original iSub Apex tank was a pretty good looker and it’s taller sibling is no different, paired with the Innokin Disrupter it makes for a really nice looking combo!

You will notice the same easy top filling system has been retained, filling the iSub Apex5 is as simple as rotating the top cap counterclockwise until the juice flow ports are exposed, and you can fill quickly and easily using any type of bottle. The capacity is 5ml which should well see many vapers through the majority of the day, though you will notice your juice consumption increase drastically when you use the tank over 50W! At the side of the tank the airflow control is found and adjusting the airflow is as simple as rotating this to open up or close down the airflow to your ideal airflow setting. The airflow works in combination with with the PRISM Flavour+ System, which draws in air through the airflow intakes, down into the chamber then back up through the coils, which also minimizes leakage and improves flavour massively.

The Apex5 is manufactured from Stainless Steel and has the same Pyrex glass tank section that has a polycarbonate outer shell to help protect against breakages. Like it’s predecessor however, this is still prone to condensation build up between the Pyrex and Polycarbonate, which can obscure you seeing how much juice is left in the tank, however a quick rinse under the tap will remedy this. The iSub Apex5, like it’s predecessor, still cannot be fully disassembled for cleaning, to clean the tank you need to remove the coil from the base and flush water through it.

Innokin have retained the excellent no spill coil swap system that now seems to be ever present in their clearomiser releases, and this means that simply by inverting the tank you can slide your coil in and out of the base quickly and without spilling juice everywhere. This is made possible by actually having 510 threading on base of the coil heads themselves!

Innokin iSub Apex5 Airflow

As per the iSub Apex, the iSub Apex5 has the airflow slot located at the top of the tank rather than at the base, allowing air to be drawn in through the top, down into the chamber then back up through the coils, minimising leakage and maximising flavour. This also helps to keep your tank cool and you will notice the difference when you run it at the higher wattages made possible with the new BVC Clapton coil heads.

This isn’t just a tank for lung hitters, mouth to lung hits are made possible with the use of Innokin’s higher resistance coils, such as the 2ohm coils for example. Simply use one of these and close down the airflow under half open, and you can mouth to lung hit with a tighter draw. Widen the airflow up and use the iSub Apex5 with the 0.5ohm BVC Clapton coils, or 0.5ohm and 0.2ohm iSub coils, and you can really chuck the clouds whilst still benefitting from very good flavour.

Innokin iSub Apex5 Performance

The Innokin iSub Apex5 is compatible with coils available for the previous iSub tanks, which come in resistances of 0.2, 0.5 and 2ohm, however this time around it comes packaged with the new 0.5ohm BVC Clapton coils that really do take the flavour from this tank to a whole new level. If you thought the flavour was good with the previous 0.5ohm coils, wait until you try the new BVC Clapton coil heads! Flavour seems richer and deeper, with complex juices really shining in this tank, and if you prefer a warmer vape you can crank the wattage up past 50w and you will get a nice, warm, flavourful and cloudy vape. Personally I found my preference was to run these coils at 45w which offered me a perfect blend of flavour and vapour.

Innokin have also released Ni200 temperature control coils, which come in two variants- 0.1ohm and 0.2ohm. The 0.1ohm coils seem to be able to be used at higher temperatures and higher power than the 0.2ohm coils, which I have found to be best if you wish to chase clouds in temperature control, however if you are a flavour chaser who prefers to use temperature control than the 0.2ohm coil will definitely be more suited to you.

Cloud chasers definitely won’t be disappointed with the airflow present in the iSub Apex5 and the cloud performance. The 0.5ohm BVC Clapton coils really do help this tank to produce some very impressive dense clouds! As with the original Apex tank, the PRISM Flavour+ boost really does help to enhance the flavour from this tank and produce some outstanding flavour results.

Just like the original Apex tank, the iSub Apex5 is one of the top flavour sub ohm tanks around, and the flavour performance has got even better with the inclusion of the new BVC Clapton coil heads. Coupled with the retention of the superb no spill coil swap system, the striking new Black Edition and the bump in capacity to 5ml, I do rate this tank as one of the very best clearomisers available for flavour.

It’s a tank that has appeal to all, from those delving into sub ohm tanks for the very first time, to seasoned cloud and flavour chasers, and it’s user friendly operation makes it one of the top options around for sub ohm tanks. It’s a wallet friendly option as well, couple that with the excellent performance from this tank and you have a sub ohm tank I highly recommend!
