Vaporesso LUXE XR Max 2

Refresh time again, we look at the new Vaporesso LUXE XR Max 2 kit

Share on:

Vaporesso sent me over a couple of these new LUXE XR Max 2 pod kits to puff on, and I’ve been having a blast with them so far.

The Luxe pod kit series from Vaporesso has been going for while now, and I’ve had a couple myself to try out. I missed the original Luxe XR Max, so I was excited to try the updated version as there aren’t too many higher wattage yet still compact kits around. It’s labelled as a ‘pod mod’ and I usually hate that term as it’s clearly a pod kit, but the airflow range and functions on this one earns that label quite easily.

The Luxe XR Max 2 has a huge 3200mAh internal battery and goes up to 80W. It has the latest Axon chip in it to keep things consistent, and along with that comes pulse mode, which is always a bonus as that boosts things a touch. There’s airflow control that goes from pretty damn loose for DTL to reasonably tight for MTL. It’s a nice big slider so it’s easy to dial down to the draw you like. And there’s a wee switch on the bottom to lock the buttons, I do love these.

Vaporesso are loud about their ‘Mega Batt’ technology on their marketing just now, and they have managed to indeed fit a good-sized battery into the reasonably small form Luxe XR Max 2. The kit is around the same size as the original XR Max, and there’s an extra 400mAh on this new version. That doesn’t sound like much but if you’re going MTL, it’s a good bit added to your vaping time without having to charge. Even RDL or DTL will last that wee bit longer than some internal battery mods that are out these days. It’s impressive, well to me anyway.

In the box you get:

  • 1 Luxe XR Max 2 Mod
  • 1 Luxe XR DTL Cartridge (pre-installed)
  • 1 Luxe XR MTL Cartridge
  • 1 GTX 0.2Ω Dual Mesh Coil (pre-installed in DTL cartridge)
  • 1 GTX 0.8Ω Mesh Coil (pre-installed in MTL cartridge)
  • 1 USB-C Cable
  • 1 User Manual
  • 1 Warranty Card
  • 1 Reminder Card

I really like that this version gives you both the Luxe DTL pod and the Luxe MTL pod, along with replaceable coils pre fitted. The version I got meant the pods both take GTX coils, and you can replace them as needed. I assume that there will be other versions available with just the enclosed pods, and you can use any previous Luxe XR pod on the kit as well so it’s very versatile. The 0.2ohm coil is also dual mesh for extra flavour and vapour.

Style wise, the kit looks like the other Luxe pod kits that have been released. It’s got the same styling but now there’s RGB LED strip lights at both sides of the 0.96” TFT screen that light up when you take a draw. And the screen is nicely laid out, with all the info you need coming up on it. Under the screen are the adjustment buttons, but the thing is that the adjustment buttons are touch screen so they’re not buttons at all. They’re responsive too, but I have had so many pod kits lately I forget that they’re there and try to use the fire button to move the wattage up and down. That’s a “me” problem though, the touchscreen adds a bit of modernity to the overall feel and look.

It’s a nicely compact device with a good bit of power, while still feeing solid in your hand. I really like it so far for the size and versatility. Please forgive the dreaded hand check photo at the end of this review, but it really is the best way to show the size, and I do have tiny hands. I also really like the black leather version I was sent as it has leather style panels on each side at the back, making it look a touch classier.

Function wise, there’s a bit there for a pod kit. Two clicks will take you to a menu where you can go into a further settings menu, change to pulse mode, eco mode, smart mode, or change the theme. The settings menu allows you to look at the puff count for the past five days, change the brightness level (although why anyone would want to lower the brightness I don’t know), turn the LED lights on or off, or set everything to default. The theme menu lets you pick from three options: nebula, vital, or wave. I like the wave setting, it’s blue. Three clicks let you change the wattage, but remember there are touchscreen adjustment buttons.

In use I, obviously, started off with the installed DTL pod that has the 0.2ohm dual mesh coil in it. The smart mode suggested 55W, so I naturally turned it down to 50W and turned the smart mode off as I prefer it a little more sedate. But this time it was spot on, when I upped the wattage to 55W to see what it was like, there was a good bit more flavour for me there and it wasn’t too warm either, I do prefer a coolish vape and it was, as I said, spot on. The airflow is quite loose fully open for a pod kit, and the slider is nicely sized to be able to adjust it gradually until you get to where you want. I personally find I get a bit more flavour when the airflow’s closed off somewhat, so I set it about halfway and it was perfect for me. There are two holes there, a big one and a smaller one above for MTL. Even closing off the big one all the way let me get a decent RDL draw on the smaller airflow hole.

With the 0.8ohm coil in the MTL pod, the smart mode suggested 16W so I believed it this time. One thing I like again is that even if you have the smart mode off you still get the recommended wattage flashing up on the screen for you. It’s a great guide for new users and saves having to peer at the side or bottom of a coil to see the wattage range. I’m still a bit wary of smart modes myself and tend to turn them off right away, but this does help. Fully closed, the airflow gives a reasonably tight draw. It’s not super-duper tight but is on par and maybe a little bit tighter than a lot of pod kits out there already. I prefer a loose MTL anyway so closing the top hole off halfway gave me my preferred draw on this kit. One thing to note is that you do have to be quite sparing with the airflow adjustment for MTL, but the slider is nicely sized to allow for that.

Final Thoughts

I love this wee kit, I really do. It’s one of the few ‘pod mods’ that feel a bit more like a mod in pod form. It’s not a mod shaped kit with a pod tank chucked on top instead of a 510 fitting. It’s a proper pod kit that works just as well as a mod in the current climate with everything being simplified somewhat.

I love that you can do MTL and DTL on it, and everything in between. I like the touchscreen for the adjustment buttons (when I remember they’re there) and I love the flavour from the GTX coils, especially the 0.2 dual mesh one. The airflow is properly adjustable, not just there to say it’s there.

Thanks again to Vaporesso for letting us try the Luxe XR Max 2 out.

Pros
  • Airflow adjustment works really well
  • Coils give great flavour
  • Hell, I even like the LED lights
Cons
  • None at all, it’s a keeper

I was a very militant smoker for many years…why would I stop doing the only thing I had left that I liked doing?  Then I fell into vaping in 2017.  My wife bought a cheap kit off from Amazon that stopped working and I took it to a local vape shop to see what they could do with it.  An hour later and full of new knowledge about watts, ohms, and juice strength, I headed home with a new nautilus mini tank for her and raved to her about the helpful guy in the shop. I must have bored her with all my new found information.  I tried her vape that night, and a week later bought my own kit. Then I found POTV and the amazingly helpful and generous people on it. A month later I was making my own (disgusting) vape juice, and a month after that I was winding coils for my new RDA.  Six years on and I'm much better at making juice, and I now have no money but lots of shiny mods and tanks
