SXmini are really spoiling us this year. First up, they released the quite superb Puremax 2, the successor to the original Puremax, which instantly became my favourite pod kit for its flavour, performance and looks, and now they have brought out the Puremax Q, a dinky box style pod kit, which takes all of the latest tech and packs it into a compact and simple kit which will be awesome for new vapours looking for the very best vape with no complications, and seasoned old hands who want something rock solid for a daily driver.

Unboxing, Specs, and First Impressions
SXmini have kept with the understated theme for the packaging of the Puremax Q, and like the device itself, it is a compact presentation. Despite the diminutive size, they still manage to pack in all of the information so you can see all the impressive features listed. There is also a window on the front of the box so you can see what it looks like which I like, photos are all well and good, but it is always better to see the real thing.
The Puremax Q comes in seven colour variants, and I was sent the Ion Black, which is so black, Spinal Tap would be proud! It does have some rather smart silver highlights, but they only jump to life if the light catches it right. It looks fantastic, and I can see my more goth leaning friends going crazy for it. Looking at the other available colours, the brighter options look just as good, I particularly like the orange one. It is a fresh, modern design.
Where the original Puremax and the Puremax 2 are both inline devices, the Puremax Q has gone for a more side by side style, so on one side you have the battery section, and on the other you have the pod section along with the control button and the lights which show your setting and battery levels. Despite the change in form factor, it is still unmistakably a Puremax. On the side is an airflow slider, which is quite firm so you can be safe knowing it ain’t going to move and lose your setting, and finally on the bottom is the charging port. Oh, and there is a metal loop on the top for attaching a lanyard, it is practical but not the most attractive. It rather feels like a bit of an afterthought.

In the box you get everything you need to get vaping fast (apart from e-liquid of course). First up you get the device itself safely protected in a foam insert. This insert also separates the Puremax Q from the extras which include two different driptips, a pod (in my case it came with a 0.6ohm pod), a USB-C cable, and the instruction booklet which is very clearly written. You may think that a basic auto draw pod kit wouldn’t need much explaining, but this is not as simple as it looks on the outside, but more on that later.
- 1500mAh Lipo battery
- 5-35W adjustable power output
- Airflow control for MTL & RDL vaping
- Side-filling design
- Auto-draw & button activation
- 510 drip tip compatible
- YiHi SX255J chipset
- Pure Anti-Dry Hit Technology
- Low-liquid alert system
- Compatible with all PX Pods

Setting Up
Getting started with the Puremax Q is very simple. First up, you need to decide which driptip you want to use from the two included options, although you can also use your own if you want to personalise things. You get a wider, more open duckbilled style or a slightly thinner bore tubular one. The wider one also has a couple of tabs on the bottom which fit into the juice locking system although there is also a slider so you won’t lose functionality by going with the other one. Make sure you don’t accidentally throw them out when you change pods though as they only come with the device.

Once you have settled on the driptip, it is time to get juiced up. The Puremax pods have an interesting and unique juice locking system which means you won’t get any leaks if you close things off, perfect if you travel a lot as this is airplane friendly. To fill up the pod, simply turn the juice lock slider anticlockwise which closes things off and then allows you to open the slider which covers the filling port. You will need to remove the pod to top things up. Once filled, slide the cover back down, twist the lock clockwise, and let it sit for a couple of minutes before vaping to make sure everything is really well soaked in.

The Puremax Q is mainly an auto draw device so now you can just crack on and start puffing. But as I alluded to earlier, there is more going on here and you have a few options to play with.
First up, you can change from only auto draw to being button and auto but pressing the button three times. To be honest, the auto draw is so good, I can’t imagine many people will want to switch, but the option is there is you want it. You can also totally power the kit down by hitting the button five times, great if you need to store it in your pocket.
The Puremax Q comes with four different power settings which can also be accessed by pressing the button four times. You will know you’ve got it right as the light at the bottom will start blinking. Then you press the fire button again which will scroll though the different levels, you can tell which one you are on as that light will start flashing. This will change the intensity and vapour production, and this will also impact the battery used. You will need to have a play to find what you like best, but you can also tune the kit to different e-liquids as some really can change depending on how much power you push to the coil.
The lights also let you know if you need to be alerted to anything. If the first light flashes six times, it is time to plug the Puremax Q in as it is letting you know the battery is low. If it flashes eight times, you have a short and will need to check your pod, but I can’t imagine you’ll see this light show often.

The Puremax Q also has the anti-dry hit protections that its bigger brother, the PureMax 2 has. It will let you know when you are getting low by flashing up lights one and four at the same time. If you insist on ignoring the warning, all lights will flash ten times when you have run dry. But really, why would you let it do that? The Puremax Q does everything it can to give you an incredible vape, and this includes monitoring the coils for the best performance so really watch out for the lights. But if you still haven’t taken the hint, once the Puremax Q detects you are running dry, it will stop firing altogether.
The Puremax Q is fully compatible with all PX Pro 2 pods so if you stick with them, you will also get the full built in protections. But if you have any older generation PX pods, you can still use them, but they are not compatible with the anti-dry hit technology, so you have to be a little more mindful as you vape.
We went into the pod options in the Puremax 2 review so head over there to see more details, but make sure you chose the most suitable coil for your chosen vape style and juice type to make sure you are getting the ultimate vape. Trust me, it is totally worth it as you will be hard pushed to get a better vape when you pair things up correctly.

Final Thoughts
The Puremax Q might just be the ultimate compact pod kit on the market right now. The build quality is a cut above the rest, although it is also a little more expensive than average so you would expect more refinement. But as always, the most important part is the vape quality, and you really won’t get much better. The Puremax range is all about flavour, and the Puremax Q does not disappoint, this is taste supercharged. Add to that, an impressive battery life in a seriously compact little device, and you might just have a giant killer on your hands.
Many thanks to SXmini for sending the Puremax Q in for review.

- Compact yet feature packed
- Superb build quality
- Anti dry hit technology
- Simple to use
- Top of the class for flavour
- The lanyard hook is out of place
