OXVA XLim SQ Pro 2

Antony got to play with the new OXVA Xlim SQ Pro 2 in his latest review

I can’t believe that it’s been a year since I last took a look at one of the OXVA Xlim series of pod kits with the XLim Pro 2 kit. Well OXVA have finally released a follow up, the XLim SQ Pro 2, and now it’s gone all fancy pants with a touch screen interface so I thought this was worth a look.

Specifications

  • 93.1 x 48 x 20.1mm
  • 113 grams
  • 1.09 inch touch screen
  • internal 1600 mAh battery
  • type-c charging
  • max 30 watts
  • compatible with the full range of XLim pods

The OXVA XLim SQ Pro 2 is available in a whopping ten colours, and I was sent the “Brown Wood” version for review. Each device comes in a nice presentation box with the XLim SQ Pro 2, two XLim Pods, a lanyard, and an assortment of paperwork.

The SQ series pods normally have a squat square form factor, but the XLim SQ Pro 2 has a taller rectangular design with softly rounded corners, in part to accommodate that large touch screen which dominates the front of the device. I love this new look, and it fits perfectly in the hand making it extremely comfortable to use. The faux wood finish on my review unit and the gunmetal finish on the main chassis and screen surround set the design off nicely.

The left side has a large button which is used to wake the screen with a single click  or turn the device on/off with five clicks. In use, the XLim SQ Pro 2 is a purely auto draw activated device though so this can’t be used as a power button, luckily the auto draw function has performed flawlessly.

The airflow control has the perfect amount of tension, and both this and the USB-C port are slightly recessed into the right side of the device which means that you won’t accidentally find yourself adjusting the airflow in use.

The XLim SQ Pro 2 sports an internal 1600mAh battery, and in my charge test this hit a peak charge rate of 1.44 amps and whilst charging the screen displays a handy animation showing the current state of charge. This displayed a 100% charge after 55 minutes with a recorded capacity of 1201mAh, however it was still charging at 1.16 amps at this stage finally dropping to zero amps after another 20 minutes with a final recorded capacity of 1338mAh.

The XLim SQ Pro 2 is compatible with the full range of XLim Pods which sit in the recess at the top. These can hold their own against any of the other mesh based pods on the market with superb flavour, great longevity, and a leak free experience. I hadn’t used any of these for a while and had forgotten how good they were, and my current pod has over 4000 puffs on it and is still going strong.

One of the main features of the XLim SQ Pro 2 is obviously that large 1 inch touch screen with its 248x240 (316 ppi) resolution and 60Hz refresh rate. This is very vibrant and easy to use even outdoors, and it’s surprisingly responsive, so I never found myself getting frustrated with missed or false touch inputs. I particularly like the default clock display, and whilst there are other themes built in, I honestly found this to be the most practical, so I stuck to that. For the stats nerds out there there’s a very comprehensive 30 day puff counter built in as well if you like to keep track of your vaping habits.

OXVA boasts of 64 combinations for the display/themes and other features like a clock, calendar, stopwatch, and torch built into the user interface, but one downside of this is that there are multiple menus and sub menus and it can initially get a little confusing with multiple ways to reach the same function. Luckily OXVA put a little cheat sheet in the box allowing you to quickly get up and running and all of the key features can in fact be accessed by swiping up, down, left or right from the main screen. After the initial setup (setting the time and date), this is what I found myself using and I simply ignored all the irrelevant fluff.

Conclusion

The XLim SQ Pro 2 is a great addition to the OXVA XLim lineup. Whilst I like earlier square SQ style kits, I love this new form factor as the added height makes this much more comfortable to use whilst also allowing OXVA to fit a larger battery which is always welcome. The vibrant touch screen display is the highlight here, and once you figure out that all the important features are accessible by swiping one way or the other on the main screen, this is a pleasure to use.

Many thanks to OXVA for sending the XLim SQ Pro 2 out for review.

Pros
  • Great form factor
  • Responsive touch screen
  • Uses tried and tested XLim pods
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • ser interface a bit cluttered at times

I was a twenty a day smoker for 25 years and like most smokers I was always going to quit "next week". Having hit my mid forties and having the usual smokers cough and difficulty with anything more than moderate exercise it was obviously time to give up the cancer sticks. I bought my first e-cigarette in 2013 when they were expensive, difficult to find and quite frankly... crap. I used it for about a week then went back to the roll ups, mark up another failed quit attempt. The fact that I had just changed jobs and was under quite a lot of stress probably didn't help. Move on to 2016 and whilst I was browsing eBay I noticed that one of the suggested items that would occasionally pop up was for a cheap e-cigarette. It looked similar to the one I'd bought 3 years earlier but it was only £5 (about 8 times cheaper than before) so I decided to give it another go on a whim. Once the kit arrived I managed to gradually replace the cigarettes with my new kit over a two month period and got into watching YouTube reviews for newer kit. My cheap and cheerful kit was replaced by a more upmarket affair, and being a noob I made a mistake once it arrived... I put in the supplied direct lung coil, this was of course a complete revelation and I haven't touched a cigarette since. Oh and I no longer spend the first five minutes of every day having a coughing fit either.
