Innokin Coolfire Z80 NEX

Innokin continue to champion the simple yet beefy single battery mod with their latest release, the Coolfire Z80 NEX

Innokin sent me over a couple of these new Coolfire Z80 NEX single 18650 battery kits to check out.

Easy to use, reliable, and nicely designed, that’s what comes to mind when I think of Innokin products, and they’re going for much the same here with the Coolfire Z80 NEX kit. Why change a winning formula that’s got so many people off the cigarettes and into vaping? And that’s what I like about Innokin. There are no complications with their kits, tanks, pods, and mods. You can just open the boxes up and get started.

The Coolfire Z80 NEX is a single replaceable 18650 mod, bundled in with the Zenith M tank here in the UK. The 5ml Nex tank is included in the international versions so if you can order that from somewhere, the link to info on it is here. It does look different and it offers something a bit new with regards to the filling port. Anyway, I have the Zenith M on my kits, so I’ll only review those here.

In the box you get:

  • 1 Innokin Coolfire Z80 Mod
  • 1 Zenith M tank
  • 1 0.8ohm MTL coil (installed)
  • 1 Z 0.3ohm RDL coil
  • 1 Spare glass
  • 1 Spare RDL drip tip
  • O-rings
  • 1 Type C USB cable
  • 1 User manual

The mod goes up to 80W, has the, now standard, lock switch on it, and comes in six different colours. I got the silver and gradient blue versions, and I must say they do look nice. There’s a classic C frame on them to make them nice and durable, and the battery tube is covered with some nicely padded leather type material. On both the ones I was sent, the leather is nicely sparkly, the silver one is especially sparkly in the light and gives off a nice iridescent rainbow effect when it’s hit by the sun. The blue shines up well too and the overall finish on the metal frame is glossy enough to keep up with the overall style.

On the front of the mod, you have the fire button at the top, it’s clicky and it works, the silver version even has a nice rose gold band around it to enhance it a bit more. Under that is a nicely integrated 0.96” TFT screen with colour display. Under that is the lock switch to close off all the buttons, and beneath that is the USB C port. On one side you have the adjustment buttons. They’re also nicely responsive, and if you hold both together, that allows you to adjust the wattage from 6 to 20W. It’ll go up in 0.5 increments, and over 20W, it’ll go up in 1 watt increments, handy for MTL users. If you hold the fire button and the up adjustment one, you can clear the puff count in a simple menu that also shows you the wattage and coil resistance as well as the current puff count. Holding the fire and down adjustment takes you to a menu that allows you to adjust the screen timeout time up to 180 seconds, the cutoff time for firing up to 18 seconds, and look at the device info. And that’s it. There are no modes to navigate, just set the wattage and vape really. It’s a perfect kit for out and about in my opinion, and I’ve had it out and about a lot lately.

The tank I got in the kits is the Zenith M. It’s 2ml capacity with top filling with a twist of the cap to open. The Z coils, and it is compatible with all of them, are push fit, and they stay in snugly, no leaks for me so far. The airflow ring is on the bottom of the Zenith M, and it has a nicely broad range of holes and slots to cater to most airflow preferences. Theres a tiny single one at the end for that really tight vape some like and a big slot at the other end for a good loose, almost DTL draw. It’s not quite DTL though, and I’d describe it as a reasonable RDL if I’m honest, but then I don’t buy Zenith tanks for DTL.

In use, I found the whole kit to be a delight. There is no finicky smart mode that sets the wattage for you. It’s just upping the wattage until it feels right. The 0.8ohm coil is perfect for MTL, and the 0.3ohm gives a nice cloudy RDL vape. On the 0.8ohm I went with three open airflow holes for a loose MTL draw and on the 0.3ohm I went for fully open. It’s all catered for nicely by the Zenith M tank and the simplicity of the mod lets you just get on with things without having to adjust modes and such.

As I said, I’ve used it out and about lately and it’s been great to take to pubs (that allow vaping) and gigs (that don’t). I was mainly using it as an MTL kit when I was out as that’s how I prefer to vape when I’m drinking, but it also worked brilliantly as a RDL tank when I was at home.

Conclusion

The Coolfire Z80 Nex is a great replaceable battery mod that fits in well with Innokin’s other offerings. It’s easy to use, looks good, and I do really like the placement of the adjustment buttons. It leaves the front a bit cleaner looking and gives the 0.96” TFT screen a bit more prominence.

The tank is great for MTL and RDL vaping. The included coils reinforce that well, and there is the option to buy the whole range of Z coils to get to the vape you like yourself if they don’t suit you.

Thanks again to Innokin for letting me try the Coolfire Z80 NEX kit out.

Pros
  • Easy to use
  • Nice design
  • Tank is great for MTL and RDL alike
Cons
  • Might be a bit simple for some but that’s what I love about Innokin

I was a very militant smoker for many years…why would I stop doing the only thing I had left that I liked doing?  Then I fell into vaping in 2017.  My wife bought a cheap kit off from Amazon that stopped working and I took it to a local vape shop to see what they could do with it.  An hour later and full of new knowledge about watts, ohms, and juice strength, I headed home with a new nautilus mini tank for her and raved to her about the helpful guy in the shop. I must have bored her with all my new found information.  I tried her vape that night, and a week later bought my own kit. Then I found POTV and the amazingly helpful and generous people on it. A month later I was making my own (disgusting) vape juice, and a month after that I was winding coils for my new RDA.  Six years on and I'm much better at making juice, and I now have no money but lots of shiny mods and tanks
