There has never been a better time to quit smoking. Where vaping opened the door to the idea of safer nicotine products, in more recent times, there have been huge leaps in other products which can help people stay on the path to a healthier lifestyle. As much as our government seem hell bent on making quitting smoking an uphill struggle again, products like nicotine pouches are offering a real alternative for people who want to break away from putting anything they don’t need into their lungs. But pouches aren’t for everyone, and SMOKO might have come up with an option that might be the answer with their new range of Nicotine Gum.

Now nicotine gum isn’t new. I tried to quit smoking using the big pharma version it back before I found out about vaping with pretty poor results. It tasted bad, had quite obvious side effects (I couldn’t use it as it gave me uncontrollable hiccups and heartburn), and it just didn’t hit the spot. I soon went back to smoking, feeling dejected that I once again failed. But I shouldn’t have beaten myself up, the products were just bad, so I was destined to fail in the same way I had with every other “approved” smoking alternative. Available at the time. If only SMOKO had been around back then as their new Nicotine Gum is better in just about every way.
For £6.99, you get a tub containing 20 pieces of sugar free gum, nicely packaged in an environmentally friendly container. It is quite similar to nicotine pouch tubs in that the product comes in a lower compartment, and there is a separate section for you put your used gum so no excuse for not disposing of your waste properly. It really helps to keep your gum fresh until you are ready to have a chew too.

There are three sugar free flavours to choose from, all at 2mg strength, Mint, Watermelon, and Blueberry.
Mint
This is a sweet and mild mint which is surprisingly smooth. I was expecting something with a bit more of a bite, what with it being sugar free, but it doesn’t have any of that nasty taste that normally comes with sweeteners, it is just a natural flavour which is easy to chew.

Watermelon
If you like watermelon e-liquid, you will enjoy this one. It is more subtle as you would expect from watermelon, but it is the lightness and sweetness that works here. I did find that the peppery nicotine taste came through a little stronger here compared to the other flavours in the range which some may enjoy as it gives it a more textured sensation.

Blueberry
This was my personal favourite. It combines a candy blueberry with a fresh menthol blast, giving you a really clean chew. It is the most gum like flavour thanks to the fresher hit, and it keeps the flavour going for a long while before it starts to mellow.

As for the texture of the gum, this is really satisfying. At first it feels quite firm and almost dry, but once you have worked it for a while, it becomes smooth and very chewable, somewhere in the middle of chewing gum and bubble gum. In fact you can get bubbles if you want, although don’t expect them to be the biggest. The flavour lasts for a long time, putting many regular gums to shame, and the chewy texture also lasts really well. The nicotine is released quite slowly, 1mg over thirty minutes, but I found it was more of a hit than I get with pouches. There was a definite slight buzz as you get the gum going, and then it settles into a slow, sustained release which should keep your cravings at bay for quite a while.
The NHS suggest no more than fifteen pieces of gum per day, and that is absolutely fine as I can’t imagine anyone would need more that that. I didn’t need anywhere near that amount to keep me feeling calm and on an even keel, but obviously your millage may vary, and you will need to experiment to see what works for you.
One final note is that this is vegan gum so if you have certain dietary requirements, you will be safe using SMOKO Nicotine Gum. I do find some vegan gums have a certain texture, but that wasn’t evident here. If I hadn’t read the blurb, I wouldn’t have thought it was anything other than a regular gum product.
Final Thoughts
SMOKO Nicotine Gum is a great alternative to vaping or pouches, giving us ex-smokers another valuable tool in our smoke free kit bag. It is a great product to help stay off the smokes, but it is also a good option for those times when vaping isn’t allowed. I know if I was using public transport, this would be really helpful on a long journey. The feel of the gum is great to use, and the flavours are tasty. Most important, I found chewing SMOKO Nicotine Gum really did help to keep my cravings well and truly under control, allowing me to carry on with my day without that annoying demon sitting on my shoulder.
Many thanks to SMOKO for sending over the range of Nicotine Gum in for review.
