Britain’s 20/20 Vape Vision

British smoking cessation services are demonstrating once more how we are leading the world in combatting tobacco related diseases by promoting vaping as a safer alternative

Share on:
Hot on the heels of the sterling work being done by Richard Holley and the smoking cessation team at Northamptonshire County Council, Smokefree Sheffield and the Birmingham City Council are currently pushing the benefits of vaping to smokers in their localities.

Did you know e-cigarettes can actually help you stop smoking?”

The question doesn’t come from the tobacco industry. It hasn’t been pushed out on social media by a vape business. It’s not the opinion of a vaper or someone those opposed to ecigs would call ‘astroturf’. It comes from Smokefree Sheffield, “local people taking collective action across Sheffield to tackle the biggest killer of our population: smoking”.

Created by a range of city partners, Smokefree Sheffield was developed to bring together everyone with a shared goal. “We’re giving the people of Sheffield the confidence that we are all working to tackle smoking in our communities.”

Smokefree Sheffield has released a free to download pdf detailing the benefits of vaping.

E-cigarettes are currently the most popular quitting aid out there. The latest research from Public Health England shows that switching to vaping is a safer alternative to smoking. So if you’re struggling to quit, thinking about giving it a go or considering switching to e-cigarettes to reap the health benefits, find out more with our five facts about e-cigarettes.

“Join the increasing number of people across Sheffield who are quitting with the help of e-cigarettes.”

Birmingham City Council mirror the facts Sheffield is sharing: “E-cigarettes are about 95% less harmful to your health than smoking cigarettes. They aren’t completely risk free, but they carry a small fraction of the risk of cigarettes. Could you make the switch?”

Birmingham states:

  • An estimated 2.9 million adults in Britain enjoy e-cigarettes (also known as vaping).
  • The main difference between e-cigarettes and smoking tobacco is that there is no combustion (burning) involved with e-cigarettes. It is the burning of tobacco and 4,000 chemicals in a conventional cigarette that causes preventable health related disease and death.
  • Public Health England has stated that using e-cigarettes is about 95% less harmful to your health than smoking cigarettes. E-cigarettes aren’t completely risk free, but they carry a small fraction of the risk of cigarettes.
  • There is no evidence of harm to bystanders from exposure to secondhand e-cigarette vapour and any potential risks are likely to be extremely low.
  • Health Professionals agree that the harmful side of smoking is reduced if you make the ‘switch’.

History will record those behind these campaigns as genuine heroes, resolutely sticking to the science and focussing on evidence-based decisions when the rest of the world is descending into hysteria and nonsense.
