I'd say rather than doubling over you could fold it so in theory you need less length, that's just my thinking though

Cast your eyes on this I folded the ekowool for the end where the coil goes round. 3 wraps of .30mm giving 0.8ohms, then the rest of the wick makes a wall around the inside of the igo-l. Reckon 1ml of scopes banana went in easily probably more. Bit shakey on one of the pics but you get the idea

Yeah, doubled over it's about the equivalent of 3 strands of 3.5 mm silica
