One thing I don't understand is why is there 2 minus battery joints, one has reverse battery protection but what does the other do ??

The -bat next the the +bat is the standard connection for the negative battery where as the one on the side is for reverse polarity protection.
I have asked them why it isn't just wired up with reverse polarity protection and await a reply.
