Tried the freezer? I'd put it in a freezer bag first to keep moisture out the board. Maybe even the fridge would work.

Judging by that pic it was cross threaded. Do yourself a favour - before fitting a screw in a battery cap of that style - turn it anti clockwise first until you feel the thread 'click' into place, THEN screw it in normally - and never try to 'push' it into place and use force in the assumption the threads are a bit graunchy - if it feels rough or sticky, don't use force, remove the cap and apply a drop of 3 in 1 oil and smear this on the threads (take care not to get it anywhere else - a single drop goes a long way if you apply it and rotate the mod in your hand) gently screw it into position (making absolutely sure the fucker isn't cross threaded) and let the threading do the work. If you don't you can trash a thread pretty quickly - just pushing the cap into place and trying to twist it closed can be an expensive mistake.

I would advise putting a light smear of 3 in 1 oil to the mod threads and battery cap asap as, judging by that pic you've already chewed up the threading a little, and gently fasten and unfasten it until it is silky smooth - and for fucks sake don't cross thread the bugger while you're working the threads.
