Battery safety and Sub Ohm vaping...

In light of recent developments I'm posting this safety information...

Currently there are NO reliable datasheets available for AW IMR OR Efest batteries (there are also a lot of fakes out there which WILL have lower capacities so only buy from reliable sources). In light of this it is difficult to say exactly what the safe discharge rates are for these batteries. If you are planning to vape Sub Ohm (Using a coil of less than 1 ohm) Please bear in mind the following...

Sub Ohm vaping is inherently dangerous, do not attempt it unless you are an experienced vaper.

I do not recommend Sub Ohm vaping at all and particularly not with unknown batteries, if you must vape Sub Ohm then use only specialist batteries with high constant discharge current ratings.

Currently the KNOWN safe constant discharge currents for AW and Efest batteries stand at 5.5a for 18350 size and 10a for 18650 size.

This makes the lowest safe coil resistances 0.76 Ohms for 18350 and 0.42 Ohms for 18650. DO NOT go below these levels unless you have specialist batteries and have seen the manufacturers specs regarding safe constant discharge current.

When measuring coils for Sub Ohm vaping it is recommended that you use a CALIBRATED multimeter, not a standard atomiser resistance testing box, these are fine for general vaping and as an indicator to show dead shorts but a difference of 0.1 Ohms between the display and actual resistance could result in battery failure during Sub Ohm vaping.

Always remember to check measurements twice before connecting your atomiser and when first firing a new build be aware of warning signs that something may be wrong such as the Mod body getting warm.

You are assuming a couple of things there TE.
That the tolerances that the battery is produced to, means a difference in measured resistance could be safer than if it was 0.1 Ohm lower.
And, that the batteries are genuine, and as described.

I'm not assuming anything other than the batteries are not supplied with accurate data, these ratings are within a safe margin of tolerance - I will not say how much as I don't want people to "Push the envelope", however I will edit the post to include notes on genuine / fake...

I've spent hours on the laptop today, weighing up cost, chemistry, protection et al.
I ended up finding AW protected, at Cloud9, after all that, and paid through gritted teeth.
I figure, over the time I'll be using them, why scrimp on pence per day?

I have no interest currently, at going sub-ohm. But well done for informing those that move on faster than their knowledge.

To be fair AW IMR's are good batteries, they just are mot made for the cloud monkeys amongst us.
 
I bought £70 worth of batteries today. Admittedly, some unprotected Torchy ones for my daughter and her fella. Getting them V5s for crimbo.
But I haven't even got a mech mod yet! Waiting on China to stop eating itself, and the Swiss to stop hoarding gold and deliver my post! lol

Quick question for you prompted ny another thread you're in. Have you ever used copperslip on your mod threads?
I know the shit gets everywhere, but if you know it is there, you can be careful. I will only be undoing one thread as well, as each mod will have it's own size configuration.

Nope I just use the Contralube, It's clear, easy to use and doesn't contain any abrasive / metallic particles, a little bit wiped onto threads with a cotton bud works wonders...

That's much better.
I haven't greased contact surfaces for ages, but I may have the RS equivalent at work. ;)
