the oval hole has metal behind it. i wonder if it has been over tightened way too much? that must be the wick hole.

I've had absolutely no luck despite all suggestions so thank you, could anyone head me in the right direction for a decent first RDA or RTA please

Fugly but easy to build, and with very decent flavour, is the Blotto. Avoid the Blotto Mini, it is the same as the Blotto with smaller capacity. For a single coil RTA I found the Destiny very straight forward.
