But taxing plastic bottles isn’t the same as taxing vape products is it?

As you say it is not taxing vape products, but the knock on effect will increase the cost of juice (yet again)

It was maybe not a good analogy, but I was using it as an example of if a government wants to tax something, they will find a way, either by direct, or indirect taxation.

The obvious route for vaping is a tax to fund research into the long term effects of using nicotine in this way.
Nice one as the higher the nic content of the juice, the higher the tax.

But unfortuneatly any tax attached to nic or vaping products will most likely end up in the general tax fund and not used to fund further research into long term effects of vaping.
