New to vaping, but wanted to give coil building a try.Have had a couple of attempts. Both times I have had a very mettalic taste that doesnt disappear.I am making sure the coil is not dry.
I am using 24AWG Kanthal ,dual coils at 0.4ohms. 9 wraps with a 3mm diameter
Using a velocity clone RDA.
Both coils light up evenly from the middle outwards.
What am I doing wrong?

Got any pics?
Is it spaced or a microcoil (squeezed together) if the latter then you've got a hotspot.

Maybe a bit of machine oil on the wire? Did you give it a good dry burn before adding your wick?

I only say this I've heard some wires arrive "dirty" & need a clean before hand

Machine oil tastes rank compared to the metallic taste described. Should have mostly died when dry burning anyway.

I'm getting a similar thing, I think. New TF RTA and using the same build of 24 awg kanthal 8/9 wraps 0.37 ohm. Getting a metallic undertone, the RTA was ultrasonically cleaned and the wire was wiped down then dry burned before wicking.

Do we have any guesses as to what causes it?

The only thing that changes it is lowering the wattage right down to about 20 but then the vape is crap. I usually hot around 50-60w.

Im just thinking bad reel of kanthal
