What's new

The Sun has a dig at vaping again

I've completely stopped eating Sweets now, because apparently they're aimed at Children !!! I feel so ashamed that I've enjoyed eating them for all of these years !!!

Most are aimed at children... there's no 'apparently' about it. That's not a secret or a revelation.

... and if vape companies use similar styles and designs they will be accused of doing so too, it's as simple as that.

Definitely a lack of imagination, along with appropriation/ brand-hijacking.

Funny that you reference: Skittles/ Skrittles/ Sticklles/ etc...

I avoid anything like this on principle to be honest.

You could call it anything, Skittles are not Skittle flavoured even though vape companies will appropriate that brand name. Fire Water doesn't taste of fire or water, Crow Black doesn't taste of crows.

maybe a lack of imagination is the problem? ..... or laziness?

If you can't think of anything to call your product other than 'Bariho Gummy Bears' and can't think of anything to put on the box other than cartoon dancing bears then I don't have much sympathy.

I found some stuff pretty easily on Google Scholar. It wasn't directly related to ejuice marketing and children, but one could find somewhat relevant background for their articles using papers analysing marketing to children in general. Someone spending somewhat more time will probably be able to do a decent enough job of strumming together a half-decent set of paragraphs that can then be used as context for such articles.

I think you are missing the point, though. This is a very simple, elementary phenomenon. A photograph of the offending eliquid packaging is all that’s required to illustrate it.

Imagine the tobacco industry brought out candy floss flavoured fags called fluffy chuffies, pink and white striped, in a packet that looked like something you’d find in the early learning centre. I’m baffled that there are people that don’t get the point here.

I think most cigarette branding and advertising when it was allowed was the complete opposite, from what I remember it was all about being grown up, nice cars, sophisticated ladies, men in expensive suits sipping whiskey, casinos and all that stuff.... that was part of the attraction to children and young people. The suggestion was that if you smoked Dunhill you could basically be James Bond or Sophia Loren

.... in a crazy flip-flop way now we have e-liquids targeted at adults that really want to be school children that like my little pony. :D

= " infantilisation ". As I noted earlier.

Yes, you did, sorry for not acknowledging your comment. It was probably what lead me down this path of thought. :)

.... I guess the dream of nice cars, expensive suits, sophisticated women and casinos has been so shattered we are now just happy being dribbling babies, shitting in our pants and watching teletubbies?

But it seems that now we have it both ways then. You can't have cartoons and bold colourful childish packaging on e-liquid because it supposedly appeals to kids who want to be childish, but sophisticated adult themed packaging will appeal to kids who want to appear more grown up!

Hmmm...

Of course, the true answer is that the packaging shouldn't matter if children aren't allowed to buy e-liquid anyway. Enforce that, and we can have whatever packaging we like.

But in reality, that won't happen. I wonder why?

= Like the poor bastards manufacturing all this ridiculous vape gear. Sitting in work-camp style factories in Mainland China,
who have to wear nappies because they're not allowed toilet breaks.

= End to End system

Actually, the answer just hit me. Children buying e-liquid should be criminalised. Send them to a young offenders jail if they are caught vaping!
