Because the wick gets pushed up against it.

I am aware of that, i just have a hard time getting my mind to accept plugging a hole with a wet cottonball, thats all.

Trust in physics...

(And believe me, i get it all, surface tension, vacuum, capillary action, taught most that stuff in school many many years ago, dont need an explanation , but it still fascinates me how they got it to work tho)
