What's new

Topside 90 Watt (single) firmware - definitely worth it.

Mostly the TC is enabled but you get a proper menu.

TC is in fact incredibly simple, it was a mystery to me for months until I looked into it, basically it stops you from getting dry hits, you just adjust the temp to suit your vape, you can almost vape until the cotton is dry, TC gives you a lower power vape as less juice is in contact with the coils - I hope that makes sense but Squonking & TC are a marriage made in heaven.
I'll give it a go then. In wattage mode my standard build is 0.4 mm kanthal {26awg), 7 wraps on an 3mm ID coil coming in at just over 1ohm. 0.4mm kanthal is 11.46 ohms/metre on the crazy wire website. The TC compatible wires I can find on that website with similar resistances are 0.3mm SS316 (10.91 ohms/metre), 0.28mm SS316 (12.52 ohms/metre) and 0.29mm SS316L (11.67 ohms/metre). If I got one of these I would be able to make a build similar to my kanthal build and everthing would be kushty? Or am I going about this the wrong way?

How I started was getting a 'Selection Box' so I could find the wire to suit me, but now I mostly use Fused Clapton SS316L or these amazing value coils as you can add a wrap or take one off, links:

200 coils SS316 for £4.05 - I've used these a lot and my goto for single coil builds.

Selection Box £3.30 - I liked most in this, some are only suitable for single builds:

This is my favourite wire for self builds:

Just PM me if you need any guidance but you will kick yourself once you get it.

Thanks. And you've just reminded me that I bought some MTL clapton wire that I didn't use much because I didn't find it made much difference. I've just checked and it's SS316L ,10.56 oms/metre.

The thing about TC is you don't have to stick to the ohmage you are used to, because you set the temperature anyway.

SS works best in TC mode at around 0.5 ohms or so. That's the sweet spot in terms of ramp up time, whilst having enough resistance to give enough variability in the resistance as the temperature of the coil changes.

For a given gauge of wire, too high a resistance (too many wraps) and it takes too long to heat up and cool down, meaning the TC circuits are always "chasing" behind trying to maintain temperature, whereas too low a resistance and there isn't enough of a change in resistance to allow the TC circuit to keep accuracy.

You can easily MTL on a 0.5 ohm SS roundwire coil - if it's too hot, turn the temperature down. :)

Very helpful. Thanks. It's figuring out how you have to change your thinking that's the tricky bit.
