Wire AWG and mm

Hopefully someone can explain something to me.
I've just bought some tri-rated cable.
1 reel of it says 1.5mm 16AWG and the other says 2.5mm 14AWG.
The last time I looked 2.5mm is about 10 or 11AWG.
Am I missing something?

Its amazing the things you overlook. I never thought about area². I always thought wire was measured on width. Another lesson learned from Sparky
